Day 1 Foix and Montsegur

In the morning, meet your local guide and stroll through the streets of Foix, that would lead you to the Foix Counts Castle. From the top this hill, the castle overlooks the valley of the Ariege River and the town of Foix. Follow your guide and push the doors of a castle in which you will discover the history of the County, armours and medieval weapons. You may also climb on the top of the main tower to admire the landscape of the Pyrenees in the surrounds.

Lunch:  Regional lunch.

In the afternoon, drive to the Castle of Montsegur. This fortress was built up on the top of a hill and was the last place of resistance of the Cathars.
Climb up to the top (30 minutes to climb up, 30 mins to go down) and admire the landscape from the top, and be told how the Crusade took this place and the tragedy that followed.
The fortress from the 13th replaces a fortified village and castrum that was mostly inhabited by people who were considered as heretics. The siege and the seizure of this place ended tragically in a field known as the “Prat dels cremats”.
