Main town of the departement Aude, Carcassonne is known above all for the medieval town but the Bastide town worth also a visit. Planned with a rectilinear street pattern by King St Louis in 1247, the town has developed itself thanks textile industries. A tour in that so-called lower town allows to discover the Saint Michel Cathedral, built gothic in style, private mansions of textile manufacturers, the covered market and the peculiar pattern of a Bastide town. This guided tour could follow the one of the Cité, as their history are complementary. A visit in the fine arts museum or a stroll along the Canal du Midi can be arranged at the end of the guided tour.
