Main town of the Departement Aude, Carcassonne is known worldwide for the medieval town. the City has developed itself during the 13th century when the new district called "bastide" was planned.

Main town of the departement Aude, Carcassonne is known above all for the medieval town but the Bastide town worth also a visit.
Planned with a rectilinear street pattern by King St Louis in 1247, the town has developed itself thanks textile industries.

A tour in that so-called lower town allows to discover  the Saint Michel Cathedral, built gothic in style, private mansions of textile manufacturers, the covered market and the peculiar pattern of a Bastide town.
This guided tour could follow the one of the Cité, as their history are complementary.

A visit in the fine arts museum or a stroll along the Canal du Midi can be arranged at the end of the guided tour.
