PICASSO : EXHIBITIONS OF 2018

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is one of the most famous Spanish painters and the leader of Cubism movement. He was a talented and prolific artist. People mostly know is major works such as Guernica(1939) or The Ladies of Avignon (1907), but he also was sculptor, ceramicist and left us collages and sketches a plenty. He was a man who live an intense life, and it's obviously difficult to sum it up... But there you are to know a little bit more about him. The great project " Mediterranean Picasso " from 2017 to 2019 was created to explore more the life and Art of this artist through abundant exhibitions in Paris, Barcelona, Montreal, and Southern France: Montpellier, Nimes, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Toulouse and so many others !!
 

PICASSO, BRIEF WORDS ABOUT HIS YOUTH
 
Born in Malaga, Andalucia, on October 25 1881, Picasso birthname was : Pablo José Diego Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Mártir Patricio Ruiz y Picasso (with such a name you cannot be lost). Young Pablo discovered painting and was taught by his father : Jose Ruiz y Blasco. Picasso's father was Malaga Fine Arts Museum Curator until him and his family moved to Northern Spain in A Coruña City in 1891. There, Picasso father used to teach painting in schools and academies and it was in this artistic atmosphere young Pablo Picasso grew up. In 1895, Picasso sister Maria Concepcion (Conchita) died. Devastated by his sister loss, he decided to start painting to feel better. Then, when he grew up, Piccasso studied Arts in both Barcelona and Madrid and could develop and improve his skills and talent.
 
THE EXHIBITIONS

Pyrénées Orientales

Not Only a painter and a sculptor, Picasso also was a ceramicist and even started his experiments in 1946, and left us around 4000 ceramics. In French Catalonia, the small town of Ceret is famous for its delicious cherries, but not only. There, visit the Modern Art Museum and discover a set of ceramics made and offered by Picasso in 1953. Attracted by the bullfighting, he created 28 cups about that topic. Those cups are part of the permanent exhibition of the Museum. Another, and short exhibition starting on June, 26 2018 to October 28 of 2018 called Céret 1911- 1913, La Mecque du Cubisme : Picasso et les Autres. This exhibition retraces the travels in Ceret of Juan Gris, Pablo Picasso, Barque, Max Jacob and some others... Letters, pictures and memories of the artists or even the atmosphere of the town that inspired them would let you their life better. Voyages imaginaires, Picasso et les ballets russes, February, 16 to June, 24 of 2018, MUCEM and centre de la Vieille Charité, Marseille

Marseille is one of the most important cities over the Mediterranean sea and an important cultural place in France. As a tribute to the cubist master, The MUCEM Museum and the Centre de la Vieille Charité welcome you to discover and enjoy Art and Culture. There, it is not the Cubism you would discover, but another side of his Art focused on the ballets and theatre developed in between 1916 and 1920. Not being French, Picasso is not required by French Army during 1st World War and is introduced to the Parisian Artistic universe by his friend Jean Cocteau. The time he lived among those artist, Picasso made and theatre background decorations for Cocteau plays, Serge de Diaghilev ballets or Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. Travelling and living between Paris, Madrid, London or Barcelona, Picasso made his friendship with Cocteau, Matisse and Max Jacob Stronger and could work in a world he liked a lot.

 
Picasso Picabia, Histoire de Peinture, from June , 9 to September 23 of 2018, Musée Granet, Aix en Provence

Afetr the exhibition in Marseille, come to Aix-en-Provence in summer to enjoy and discover the one dedicated to Picasso and Francis Picabia. Even if the Master of Cubism and the great Dada and Surrealism painter and philosopher knew each other, they never really got to be friends. However, there is a lot of connections and links between both artists and this is what Granet Museum tries to focus on during this exhibition.



  From Cubism to Readymade and Surrealism, this exhibition is made to let you understand better the two artists and their universes. Remember also that you are in Aix-en-Provence and so, enjoy this time to discover once again Cezanne paintings.
Soleil chaud, Soleil Tardif, April, 21 to October, 28 of 2018, Foundation Van Gogh, Arles

Van Gogh Foundation in Arles does not really organizes an exhibition about Picasso Actually, the purpose is mostly to make understand better how light and landscapes in Provence inspired many artists. The sun that "burns", the most warming one inspired more Van Gogh. Picasso and other painters works mostly focused on the influence of lights and gave a special tribute to Vincent Van Gogh.

After Barcelona lost its battle against Francisco Franco, Spain became a dictatorship and Europe entered into a new war... Picasso felt sad and hopeless. Through an exhibition of 40 paintings in the Carré d'Art Museum in Nimes, discover a tormented side of Picasso. You can make a link in between Picasso's work and other painters who lived the same troubled times.

Picasso donne à voir, from June, 15 to September, 23 of 2018, Musée Fabre, Montpellier

Once again, Fabre Fines Art Museum offers an exceptional exhibition dedicated to Picasso. After Il Caravaggio, Neapolitan Painting or recently Francis Bacon, the museum decided to exhibit painting that Picasso gave to French State in 1979. In Picasso donne à voir, the idea is to show an evolution of Picasso thoughts through is Art. Not only mind and ideas evolve, so does the technique and this is what the Museum wants to suggest by this exhibition.


Faune fais-moi peur, images du Faune de l'Antiquité à nos jours, from July, 07 to October, 07 of 2018, musée de Lodève
 Lodève After a wonderful exhibition about engraving in 2017, Lodeve Museum offers an exhibition dedicated to a mythological creature : the Faun (half man and goat). Among the artistic creations, admire some of Picasso dedicated to the Faun.
